Is certification required to practice EMDR?No. Certification is not required at this time in order for a clinician to practice EMDR. If you have taken the basic training and consultation, then you can use EMDR under your license. Certification in EMDR is an option that many therapists have wanted because of managed care concerns and hospital privileges. In some venues, two weekend trainings in EMDR are not considered sufficient. The EMDR Certification model is patterned after the certification models of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAFMT) Approved Supervisor training. "A clinician who is EMDRIA Certified in EMDR has been licensed or certified in their profession for independent practice and has had a minimum of two years experience in their field. They have completed an EMDRIA approved training program in EMDR therapy, have conducted a minimum of fifty clinical sessions in which EMDR was utilized, and have received twenty hours of consultation in EMDR by an Approved Consultant. In addition they must complete twelve hours of continuing education in EMDR every two years." (http://www.emdria.org/?page=21).
